Truman announced that the United States would help South Korea because when the
United States did not intervene with Germany in WWII it did not work. Within days the UN voted unanimously to help as well. However, the Soviet Union would have vetoed the act, but they had been boycotting the meetings due to the UN not recognizing Moa´s communist China. Truman did not ask congress for a formal declaration of war as required by the constitution, and also sent troops to south korea.
