At Fort Ridgely Sibley sends out a burial party find and bury the civilians who died during the attack. The party is attacked by the Dakota soldiers at Birch Coulee. This was one of the hardest fought battles of the whole war. The Dakota kept he U.S soldiers for 36 hours under siege until a Fort Ridgely relief detachment arrives to free them.
