The Homestead Strike involved the Amalgamated Association of Iron & Steel Workers and the Carnegie Steel Co. An earlier strike in 1889 gave workers at the Carnegie Steel Co. favorable treatment, but Carnegie was determined to expire it. Carnegie eventually locks out Union workers who do not accept his changes. The steel plant manager calls a mercenary attack on the strikers, but it fails. The manager calls 8000 militia to end the strike. The Amalgamated Association of Iron & Steel was dissolved after, and Carnegie gave workers longer hours and smaller wages. The strike became a symbol for corporate power and corruption.
