The Dakota on the reservation were suffering. And to make matters worse, on August 17th, 4 Dakota men kill 5 settlers, and convinced Dakota leader Little Crow to lead a fight against the traders and settlers. On August 18th the Dakota killed traders and government employees. Most of the Dakota soldiers were young men, but most Dakota decided not to fight.
