This battle started when Germany invaded Belgium due to the Schlieffen Plan. The Belgium army was swept aside and defeated easily, and the British Expeditionary Army moved to the Battle of Mons. The French wanted the BEF to leave the coast, but instead the French retreated to the River of Marne. It was here when Germany and France fought in the first major battle in the West.
