On the night of the nativity, Sam is very nervous and almost doesn’t leave the toilets at school. But knowing Hector and Kathleen are going to be there makes him do it, even after all the bullying. However, half way through the performance, Riley – the only one who’s come in the end, much to Sam’s disappointment and confusion – dashes out on the phone. Hector has had a heart attack and is in hospital. A friend’s parent takes Sam home. Benjamin and Alex don’t speak to him and Riley is at the hospital – Berwick Infirmary. Sam sits in his bedroom in his shepherd costume Kathleen made and waits for news.

21st December, 2002 – Riley calls, Hector is stable. She stays, Sam is alone at home since Alex and his brothers or Benjamin want nothing to do with him.
