The opening of the first cannery at Klawock Creek on Prince of Wales Island marked the beginning of commercial salmon fishing in Alaska. By 1900, 20 more had been built and 80 by 1920. This brought into conflict commercial interests, environmental protections, and indigenous fishing rights. (land/people)
