An Exxon Valdez oil tanker spilled over 10.8 million gallons of crude oil into the area near Tatitlek, Alaska. This was the second largest spilled in US history and affected 1,300 miles of coastline. Ultimately, Exxon paid $507.5 million in punitive damages and this accident spurred federal legislation such as the Oil Pollution Act.
