Union General Ambrose Burnside's first battle as the Union Commander. Gen Burnside succeeded in marching the Union Army to Richmond, but was not given the order to attack until later. This gave the Confederate army time to entrench, which gave the Confederates a great advantage. The battle left 13,000 Union soldiers dead, and was described as a 'butchery'.
