The election between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge led to the final succession of the Southern states. Being that Lincoln wanted equality and freedom for all men, abolishing slavery was around the corner ,causing pro-slavery Southern states to leave the Union.
