The annuities are 2 months late, and the Dakota have little to no food. So, on August 17, 1862, 4 Dakota men kill 5 settlers. The soldiers lodge convinces Little crow to lead the fight. At the crack of dawn, Dakota warriors attack the lower Sioux agency and kill traders and government employees. They then proceed to kill hundreds of white settlers.
