Between August 1942 and February 1943, both nations began a struggle in the city that would become the bloodiest in the history of mankind. The battle in Stalingrad claimed more than 4 million victims and left the city in ruins. The Luftwaffe, the German air force, bombarded the city daily to make the Soviets desist. But the Red Army of Stalin continued its fight and was gaining more and more ground in the contest. The German soldiers could not against the great counterattack of the Soviet forces and their fight was practically a fight with no way out. By the end of January 1943, German troops were surrounded and many soldiers were captured.

The Germans surrendered in Stalingrad on February 2, being the first great defeat of Germany and marking the beginning of the downfall of Hitler's army.
