This event in 1942 which involved Nazi Germany, the Untied Kingdom, the United States, France, Poland, and Czechoslovakia was a very bloody and gruesome attack on the German occupied port in Dieppe, France. The attack occurred from the early hours of 5 am to 10:35 am. Of the 4,963 Canadians who embarked for the operation, only 2,210 returned to England but many were wounded. There were 3,367 deaths, 1,946 were captured as Prisoners of War and 916 lost their lives while Germany successfully defended the port. Many of the soldiers were young men and this is a quote from the prime minister on the 75 anniversary of Dieppe. "75 years ago to this day, almost 5,000 Canadian soldiers, together with their British and American allies, landed in occupied France, on the shores around the town of Dieppe. Today, we remember the Canadians who sacrificed greatly in this dramatic chapter of the Second World War".
