In the year 1838, Sam Houston requested for the United States to annex Texas into the United States. However, the United States government was very hesitant about this, for the country was very torn on this decision. The Southerners were eager to accept Texas as part of the United States, for it would add another slave state to the Union. However, the Northerners were very against slavery, so the addition of another slave state would encourage the Senate to side with slavery. Therefore, the U.S. did not annex Texas until a few years later. Finally, on December 29, 1845, Texas entered into the Union as the 28th state.
