On this night, Paul Revere rode to Lexington to warn Sam Adams and John Hancock (two leaders of the Sons of Liberty) that the British were coming to capture them. He also warned the British would continue to Concord to capture or destroy supplies there.

The famous line "one if by land, two if by sea" refers to the number of lanterns hung in the steeple of the Old North Church in Boston, so that Revere knew how the British were traveling (they came by sea)
