Lieutenant James Cook began his voyage to study a transit of the planet of Venus across the sun when he left the port of Plymouth, England in 1768. During his voyage, he explored and mapped the pacific ocean.

This event was significant because Cook was the first to use a chronometer to accurately determine his longitude at sea.
