Reagan was shot as he was exiting the Washington D.C. Hilton Hotel following a speaking engagement. The shooter, John Hinckley Jr., was trying to impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he had a crush on, with this attempted presidential assassination. Reagan was wounded by a bullet that ricocheted off his limousine. Although his wounds were critical, he only remained in the hospital for 12 days. Press Secretary James Brady and two others were also injured during the assassination attempt. James Brady suffered brain damage and was left permanently disabled.
