The ending of the slave trade didn't end slavery at all, but it made it illegal to transport more slaves into the country. While slaves were still smuggled, plantation owners needed to be more careful with the slaves they had, improving conditions for them since there wasn't an easy or legal way to get more. Treatment and punishment of slaves, however, did not waver.
