26 mar 1953 ano - Salk Vaccine

Descrição:

Jonas Edward Salk was an American virologist and medical researcher who developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. He was born in New York City and attended the City College of New York and New York University School of Medicine. On March 26, 1953, Salk announced on a national radio show that he has successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio. Though announced in 1953, it was not until 1955 that Salk developed the inactivated poliovirus vaccine; thus began widespread immunization. This was followed in 1960 by a live, attenuated oral vaccine developed by Sabin. The effect was impressive. From 28 000 reported cases of polio in 1955, in 1956, one year after immunization, there were only 15 000 cases. This was a very important step for medicine because not only did it stop the spread of polio, but it also laid the groundwork for the development of future vaccnes.
