Sputnik was the second spacecraft launched into orbit, following the launch of Sputnik I. Sputnik II, however, was the first spacecraft to carry a live animal, a Soviet dog named Laika. This event is significant because it put the USSR ahead in the Space Race and created a sense of urgency in the US to catch up with the USSR.
