While a US destroyer was patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin off the North Vietnamese shore, it was attacked, allegedly, by the North Vietnamese. As a response, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to take military actions in Southeast Asia. This event is significant because it is a major contributing factor for the United States involvement in the Vietnam War.
