Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first to be released into space. After 15 minutes into being in space, a conversation between Yuri and the Baikonur launch facility revealed that the Soviet Union had beaten the US in the race to put a human in the cosmos. He had orbited the Earth one single time before coming back down.
