In East Berlin during the early 1950s, East German officials made demands for workers to increase production quotas. With many East German workers feeling that these demands were unreasonable, workers rose in protest against the East German government. Eventually, the protest turned into a riot throughout all of Eastern Germany until the East German government brutally suppressed the uprising. This event is significant because it demonstrated to the world that life under communism was repressive.
