The first of the two battles that drove the French out of the "low countries"-- Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg This battle was fought in modern-day Belgium. The French lost because their army was dispersed over a 4-mile ridge, whereas the allied forces concentrated their attack on the French army's center.
