Having lost his libel action against The Sun in the UK over its “wife-beater” accusation, Depp has taken his battle to Virginia to sue her personally.

Virginia’s anti-Slapp laws grant immunity in connection with claims “based solely on statement . . . regarding a matter of public concern that would be protected under the first amendment, unless made with actual malice”. Depp argued that the anti-Slapp immunity does not apply because the dispute relates to their relationship and not to matters of public interest.
