The Capuchins were organized in Italy in 1525 to renew Franciscan spirituality. They requested papal permission to follow strict Franciscan observance. The Capuchins were mostly centered in Italy but also developed churches in East Africa and the Kongo; in Europe they joined with Jesuits in active outreach among Protestants, Orthodox, and Muslims.
