Starting from 1960, the USSR began launching probes into space in hope of making contact with Mars. After several failed attempts"Mars 2" , a space lander launched by the USSR crash landed on Mars in November of 1971. A week later, "Mars 3" made a soft landing on Mars. This is considered to be the first successful landing of an object from Earth on Mars.
