Sand dunes and the smaller type of ripples also exist on Earth. However, the unique aspect are the larger ripples; roughly 10 feet apart, they are a type not seen on Earth nor previously recognized as a distinct type on Mars. They have distinctive crest lines, compared to the smaller ripples. The sand is very dark from the darkness of the minerals that make up its composition.
