This image, captured by Curiosity, shows a dust-carrying whirlwind, called a dust devil, moving along the ground inside Gale Crater. On Mars as on Earth, dust devils are whirlwinds that result from sunshine warming the ground, which makes air convective (due to the heat rising from the ground). Curiosity's observations of Martian dust devils provide information about Mars's wind directions and interaction between the surface and the atmosphere.
