In !925 Tennessee outlawed the teaching of evolution due to many believing in the Bible. That same year, John Scopes attempted to teach his students about evolution. He was sent on a trial and found guilty. The trial led many to think about science and religion and the ability of rural Americans to resist ideas they found controversial.
