On December 31, 1958, at a New Years Eve party at a Havana casino, Gen. Fulgencio Batista told his associates that they were leaving Cuba that night by airplane. At 3 AM they departed from Camp Columbia airfield, on three Cuban Air Force transports, with whatever portable cash, fine art and wealth they could carry, initially bound for New York; but were denied landing permission. Instead they flew to Ciudad Trujillo in the nearby Dominican Republic, where they were allowed, at a considerable price, to land and then transit onward. Batista and his cadre proceeded from the Dominican Republic to Portugal. Batista spent his exile in Portugal and died of a heart attack in Spain in 1973, reportedly two days before a planned assassination attempt was to be carried out by Cuban agents.
