In the 19th Century, there had been a strong movement for home rule among Irish Nationalists. However, the demand for independence depended on the position of Ulster, who's largely protestant population were not prepared to accept Southern Catholic Ireland having control over them. Home Bills were put through but failed. By 1905, a group called Sien Fenn had formed to commit to freeing Ireland from its connection to Britain. In 1912, the House of Lords rejected the Home Rule Bill, almost causing Civil War.
