12 jun 1987 ano - 12 June 1987: A third victory for the Conservatives at the polls

Descrição:

A complicated election for Bell: after leaving Saatchi & Saatchi, he's put on a £24,000 annual retainer to stay away from the Conservative campaign unless cleared by the Brothers Saatchi.

The Saatchis run a negative campaign, says Bell, focusing on Labour bashing. Thatcher wants the focus to be on what the Tories have achieved since 1979. She is "low, demoralised, and believing (she) will lose", and asks Bell to come in as a "private advisor".

Labour's campaign for Neil Kinnock is run by Peter Mandelson, who commissions the Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire" director Hugh Hudson for the party's political broadcast, "Kinnock: The Movie".

Hudson was an ad director before heading into movies.

As Bell's role in the campaign becomes increasingly clear, it causes a massive fall-out with the Saatchis. Three months after the polls, they resign the Conservative account.
