In 1822, when Napoleon conquered Portugal the Portuguese had fled to Brazil along with their king. While the king was in Brazil he had introduced many reforms like the development of local industries. When the king wanted to take back Portugal, he left his son, Dom Pedro to lead Brazil. Other leaders came to Portugal and asked for Dom Pedro to return. He refused and became an emperor of an independent Brazil. With Brazil under Dom Pedro’s rule, it continued to be a monarchy until 1889.
