The rights of citizens, all people born in the united states are granted citizenship, no state can deny any person the equal protection of laws, no state can deny any person life, liberty, property without due process of law. (1868)

Cause: Even though African Americans were free, southern states still tried to infringe upon their rights.
Effects: States do no have the right to take away life, liberty, or justice and the citizenship was defined.
