29 dez 400 ano antes da era comum - Trial of Socrates
Descrição:
- by Anytus, Meletus and Lycon on the charges of corrupting the youth and atheism
- cross examination of meletus
- vote of condemnation
- suggests he should be penalized with lifetime maintenance at the expense of the state in a big house in athens
- socrates imprisoned - said he wouldn’t leave prison bc like where would he go
- Phaedo - last dialogue about immortality of the soul
- drinks hemlock (method of execution)
- last words “I owe a rooster to Asclepius” (god of healing)
why was he tried and convicted?
- part of it was political - his affiliation with Alcibiades and Critias (leaders of the 30 tyrants)
- It might also be that despite the amnesty after the war, the Athenian democracy was still so fragile that it couldn't tolerate a gadfly, somebody who kept stinging the citizens into admitting that they really didn't know what they were talking about.
it seems that some of his teaching might have been profoundly antidemocratic
men can only be good at one thing, but democracy is about everyone having the capacity to run politics
