This is in which Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union Candidate John Bell. The election was about the constant issues with slavery and how Lincoln ran in the Republican Party, in which he said that slavery would not spread any farther than it already had. Southerners feared that the election of Lincoln would lead to its demise, and vowed to leave the Union if he was elected.
