13 mar 1939 ano - Allies Sue for Peace!
Descrição:
The French, who are now broken without their capital and accepting their total defeat, were willing to discuss terms and organise negotiations with Germany immediately; Halifax now faced the final decision on peace.
Winston Churchill, now finding newfound enthusiasm, helped form a new alliance with Anthony Eden and a select group of supporters who share the same view: loyalist members in the Conservative and Unionist Party and the Opposition.
Halifax found himself in a position where he had to make the difficult choice between his conscience about the future of the country or his political interests.
By suing for peace, he would face the possibility of massive electoral consequences or even be ousted from his position as Prime Minister. But equally, in his own eyes, he saw it as the only way to save his country.
If he was to continue the war, several reports suggested Germany could invade Great Britain within a year. The UK barely even had enough equipment to arm its infantry and had too few bunkers to stop the German panzers if they got onto land.
He sought the advice of the King and Neville Chamberlain, who himself was very unwell and distraught at the state of the nation. They advised Halifax to lead with his conscience and be decisive, even if it would make him unpopular. The UK and France collectively sued for peace with Germany.
