On the same day as the United States return of Okinawa to Japan, five White House operatives were caught breaking in to the office of the Democratic National Committee. These operatives worked for Republican President Nixon. This lead to a two year long conflict in which the U.S. government tried to get Nixon to turn over audio tapes regarding the event, leading to his resignation as President.
