Charles Darwin wrote the theory of natural selection, which was essentially an explanation of heredity without yet knowing about genes. He stated that small inherited variations help an individual survive. He arrived at this conclusion after his voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle. He traveled around and study the different types of variations in similar species. Which lead to his theory.
