They won 92 of the 100 Senate seats and 160 of the 161 seats was allowed to compete for in the Diet (parliament). Many Poles refused to vote for the Communist Party candidates in the Diet.
Satellite socialist groups that had been the traditional allies of the Polish Communist Party refused to join a coalition unless Solidarity was represented.
