The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first significant law restricting the immigration of the Chinese into the United States. Although the Chinese composed only .002% of the nation’s population, Congress passed the exclusion act to appease worker demands and relieve widespread concerns about maintaining white “racial superiority”.
