In 1815 Italy had defeated Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo and this marked a way for efforts in unifying the country. In the 1830's many revolts occurred across the country and the pope asked for Austrian help. Sardinia began to rise in power with Vittorio Emanuel as king. Sardinia then joined Britain and France in Crimean War. Camillo di Cavour provoked Austria to go to war against Sardinia, France had helped Sardinia and defeated Austria. After this more revolutions occurred over the country and Cavour had soon succeeded in uniting Italy and was declared nation state March 17, 1861.
