The Japanese were planning on attacking another US territory that was accessible to them. The obvious target was the midway Islands. The US government had amazing cryptographers to break Japanese code. A cryptographer found out about the attack and the US stocked up military in the Midways. The 4 day battle resulted in immense losses on both sides, but more for Japan. They lost 275 planes and 4 aircraft carriers, which were crucial for their navy and was a turning point in the war because it is going to be hard for Japan to recover from this attack that they launched.
