The war began between Austria-Hungary and Serbia after the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand. The international conflict embroiled most European nations including Russia, the U.S. and Middle East. The two sides consisted of the Central Powers ( Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey ) against the Allies ( France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy and Japan, then in 1917 the U.S.) The “ War to End All Wars” had unprecedented slaughter , carnage and destruction of both civilian and military personnel.
