Appomattox Court House is a village in Virginia where Confederate forces surrendered to Northern Union forces on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War. After engaging with Union troops, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia—under the command of General Robert E. Lee—was surrounded at the town of Appomattox, Virginia. Later that day General Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, three miles to the northeast.This helped divide the country by the South not having one.
