Friends and family day! Today was the day that prisoners were allowed to visit their family and friends, now you would think that since these men have been treated so poorly that the family would demand retribution? However they never did, no they came in and acted as if it was a real prison. In the article that Zimbardo wrote himself, he spoke about how if a parent asked why he would just say "What's the matter with your boy? Doesn't he sleep well?" Then I asked the father, "Don't you think your boy can handle this?" [The father] bristled, "Of course he can – he's a real tough kid, a leader." Turning to the mother, he said, "Come on Honey, we've wasted enough time already." And to me, "See you again at the next visiting time." This way of gaslighting the parents helped to spur the experiment no matter the moral consequences.
