Johnny Depp has given fans a first look at his new role as celebrated photojournalist W. Eugene Smith in new film Minamata.

The Hollywood star features in the Andrew Levitas directed film about the horrific impact of mercury poisoning in coastal Japan and the enduring fight to take those responsible for the environmental catastrophe to account.

In a black and white still taken as production gets underway across Japan, Serbia and Montenegro, Depp, 55, bears a striking resemblance to the bearded, bespectacled Smith, his ever present Minolta camera at the ready.
