1 h 5 jan 2019 ano - IO DONNA Italy Amber Heard I'm on the side of women who are victims of violence Like me INTERVIEW

Descrição:

Amber Heard: "Tribulations strengthen me. That's why I'm on the side of women who are victims of violence."

The label of “ex of” immediately shrugged it off. In the room, as a superheroine, she plays it on par with her fellow man. And in life, as an activist against sexual assault. Ready to break some taboos

by CRISTINA SARTO

tiring to be a superhero. A surreal experience, with all those special effects...' Amber Heard's voice is warm, enveloping. Add to this the baby hair made in Texas (where – just to understand – the saying “the longer the hair is, the closer you are to God”), the beauty contests at 17, just arrived in Los Angeles, and the mind goes straight to certain clichés: doll, sex symbol. Exactly what this 32-year-old girl is not. Or at least not only.

To make you think badly (but only for a moment) now you also put Aquaman, the film adaptation signed by horror master James Wan of the homonymous comic of the DC Comics universe (in theaters on January 1). A film in which both protagonists have a decidedly extraordinary chromosomal set: Amber, in fact, who squeezed in a greenish latex weat plays Mera, queen-guerril of the submerged world of Atlantis; and colleague Jason Momoa, the Hawaiian who lends muscle and exotic look to the human-Atlantic hybrid Arthur Curry/Aquaman.

A pair of celluloids already appeared (she only briefly) in Justice League, the 2017 fantasy directed by Zack Snyder. And so how do you explain that two characters like this have not yet fallen in love? Amber Heard laughs, but at the bottom the question of whether she is waiting for her. "It would have been a classic formula, but this is a modern fairy tale. There is an element of attraction between them, but what drives them to be together is something else: they have a mission to accomplish. The romantic aspect takes a back seat.'

The other detail that changes the cards on the table? For the actress this is the first major film after the shipwreck of the relationship (3 years of engagement and 15 months of marriage) with Johnny Depp, in 2016, between accusations of domestic violence and bang and response in the press. With a complete end: he who disburses 7 million dollars and she who donates everything to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), in defense of human rights, and to the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. 'But I've been supporting the ACLU since I was 16,' she rushes to clarify. True, but from that moment the 'wife-di', all moine and red carpet, has turned into the hard and pure activist. 'I have never seen a person more passionate than you,' commented Amanda Nguyen, 2019 Nobel Peace Prize candidate and founder of Rise, the association (which Amber also joined) responsible for the Charter of the Rights of Sexual Violence Survivors, already approved by the US Congress in 2016 and which wants to be recognized all over the world.

It is the lens, this personal one, through which to look at the figure of Mera. A turning point compared to the bluntly sexy roles of the past (the high school student of “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane” the first starring – but never distributed in Italy-, the spy of “3 Days to Kill”, the reporter of “Le verità sospeso”), but also the rewriting according to the Heard-thinking of the relationship between man and women. "How would I define the bond between Mera and Arthur? On par. She comes from the underwater world, she knows how to control the waters, but on land she feels like an alien. For him it's the opposite. Everyone has their own identity and a slice of responsibility in the adventure they undertake.'

A very evolved dynamic to be a comic book created in 1941.
It's true. Two years ago, before accepting this part for Justice League, I read a couple of numbers. I was immediately struck by the way Mera makes her first appearance. First of all it is she who helps Arthur save a village from a flood. At some point, then, one of the inhabitants asks, “Who is she? Aquawoman?”. And she replies more or less like this: “Hey, wait a minute. I have a name." Here, at that moment I immediately thought, “I like it, this woman is my type.”

Finally, right?
Finally, of course. I like toarsh, independent female characters who live their own lives and are not there to support the male on duty. Too bad that in the entertainment world, but to tell the truth not only in that, there has always been a shortage of figures like these. He doesn't know how long I was hurt, but after all it was a matter of time. Things are changing and I am very happy about it.

Do you only make committed professional choices?
Yes, it's a responsibility that I feel rooted in me. The luck of this profession is that it offers me an important platform, but I have a duty to give something in return. Talking about justice, making my roles make an impact... is the least I can do.

Is this what pushed her in 2010 to make public the relationship with photographer Tasya Van Ree?

Definitely. It was a time when my colleagues were increasingly demanding privacy and in the meantime being bisexual was considered a taboo. But to be silent about something means to admit below that that thing is wrong. But I knew that was not the case. Then I told about myself, to describe reality in a truthful way and offer young people someone in which to recognize themselves, since those of my generation had grown up without any reference model. Who knows if thanks to me someone felt less inadequate.

Is Hollywood less liberal than it seems?

It is an industry full of fashionable people and noble ideals, but it does the opposite of what it preaches. He chases what gets the consent of the public and so it ends up repeating itself, always telling the same stories. I don't care about this approach. We need to get in touch with different people, go further, not stay the same as always.

Even before joining Rise, she was a big supporter of the #metoo movement. Are you satisfied with what you have achieved?

I am happy that the conversation has changed radically, today there is much more awareness. We women, however, are at a crossroads: we are galvanized because we finally know what we are entitled to, what our place is, but at the same time we are exhausted by the attitudes that have so far kept us in check, belittled or reduced to objects. The film industry still has a lot to do to catch up: we need more women behind the camera and equal wages for everyone. It is not possible that we actresses are paid less, when we are often the ones who spend more time on the set to prepare make-up and hair.

Is it true that you like ancient books?

Yes, I make a collection of them. I like to have items that I can hold in my hand, that remind me of the places I've been or that tell about me. I carry them with me especially when I travel, they help me feel at home.

Home for her is also Austin, Texas.

Yes, a place where the horizon is infinite. That sky is what I miss the most. As a child I spent a lot of time outdoors with my father, who was a half-cowboy. We used to go hunting and fishing together. At 12 years old I couldn't ride a horse that had been mad. I saw a handkerchief of grass and jumped down. Then Dad's gaze pushed me back up. From that time on I learned that worse than being disarrayed, there is only the decision to stop riding.

How much did the separation from her husband affect her commitment to defending women?

In my life it has always been the edges, the difficulties, that defined who I am and made me stronger. You learn from battles and tribulations, more than from happy moments.
