Descrição:

Nancy Cartwright was born 24 JAN 1944 in Pennsylvania.

Nancy Cartwright was born in Pennsylvania on January 24, 1944. She is an American Philosopher that currently teaches in the Philosophy department of the University of California at San Diego and the University of Durham. Her major contributions to the Philosophy of Science was that she questioned scientific theories and rather emphasized scientific practice. From her essays and books, she has made many important contributions to debates on objectivity, laws of nature, causation and casual inference, and scientific models in both the natural and social sciences. Cartwright states, explanatory laws do not describe regularities existing in nature. However, the laws of basic theory cannot be described in realistic terms like the theoretical theories and their describing laws.
Cartwright believes in a type of empiricism that is closely related to that of Neurath and Mill. She spends her time worrying how science achieves the success it does, and what kind of metaphysical and epistemological presuppositions are needed to understand the success. Cartwright builds empiricism from the ground up based on her research and insight. She focuses on the laws of nature when reconfiguring empiricism. She is a firm believer in the evidence-based practice of science and today teaches how to use and organize it.
